The Planthunter: Truth, Beauty, Chaos and Plants
From street gardens in LA to grand country estates in Auckland; tiny rental gardens in Sydney to plant packed suburban Brisbane backyards, The Planthunter: Truth, Beauty, Chaos and Plants is a visceral and immersive exploration of the exceptional and ordinary ways people around the world find truth, beauty, purpose and connection through the act of gardening.
The book is a culmination of the five years we (author Georgina Reid and photographer Daniel Shipp) have been pondering questions of plants, people and connection on The Planthunter online magazine. It’s a reflection of our complimentary creative vision, shared aesthetic sensibility, and commitment to truthful storytelling. We’ve put our all into this book, and we’re proud as punch. It’s our hope that the stories contained within its pages will inspire contemplation, curiosity, care and action, as they have for us.
In Australia and the UK The Planthunter: Truth, Beauty, Chaos and Plants is published by Thames and Hudson (November 2018) and in the USA and Canada it’s published by Timber Press (April 2019).
A Love song to the earth
‘This book is many things. It’s a collection of stories about people that have affected, shaped, inspired and challenged me in my journey towards understanding what it is to be a tiny piece of silk in the grand spider web of existence. It’s an ode to the act of gardening (although you’ll learn nothing about pruning, pests and diseases or growing vegetables). It’s a celebration of the exceptional and ordinary ways people engage with the world around them through plants. It’s a bunch of questions and not many answers. Finally, and simply, it’s a song of deep love and reverence for this world, our Mother Earth’ – Georgina Reid, author
We created this book because we want to explode common perceptions of what a garden is and can be; We want to seduce people into falling in love with plants; We want to challenge people to think more about the world around them and their relationship to it, and we want to show readers that all these things can be very fun, very beautiful and exciting.
CELEBRATING THE EXTRAORDINARY AND ORDINARY
Each of the people in the book are constant gardeners – committed to the cultivation of the earth and the human spirit. They’re landscape architects, artists, garden designers, plant collectors, wanderers, big thinkers, florists, writers. They’re people whose visions are singular, grounded, sometimes challenging, often astounding, always beautiful and always truthful.
They’re Bev McConnell, Bill Henson, Bruce Dunstan, Cevan Forristt, Clare James, Clive Blazey, David Godshall, David Holmgren, David Whitworth, Fran Bodkin, Gaylene Krajewski, Janet Laurence, Leslie Bennet, Lucy Culliton, Marysia Mirnowska, Max Gill, Michael McCoy, Michael Shepherd, Ron Finley, Simon Rickard, Sue and Peter Miles, Thomas Woltz, Topher Delaney and Trisha Dixon.
AN AVANTE GARDE(NING) BOOK
The Planthunter is an exciting, seductive and refreshing call to arms. It’s a new generation of gardening book for a new generation of gardener; encouraging readers to fall in love with the natural world through falling in love with plants. It’s for the plant curious, the plant killer, the plant lover, and everyone in between.
Not only is it jam-packed with soulful, considered and immersive stories, it’s a beautiful object too. Designed by the irrepressible Evi O, it’s got a lemon yellow linen wrapped spine, a slick and punchy design, and lots of lush colours. We might be biased but we can’t put it down.
