Matt & Lentil are a ridiculously gorgeous pair of vegetable and flower growers, overall wearers, and all round wonderful humans. They own Grown & Gathered, a vegetable and flower farm in Tablik, Victoria. Every Saturday they pack their van and head to Melbourne to drop off the freshest vegetables and flowers to lucky city folk.

We spent a night at their little farm house, discussing flowers, food, and life, with Matt constantly pulling out yet another jar of pickled something or other. The highlight of the evening may well have been the introduction to the pickleback, apparently all the rage in the USA. This curious beverage involves a shot of whiskey followed by a chaser of pickle juice. Hmm. It was memorable, if nothing else.

What struck me most about the Grown and Gathered gang was their absolute integrity and commitment to doing the best by both the land and their customers. There is lots of noise these days about doing things properly, sustainably, locally etcetera, and often the reality is a little murky and less wholesome than it appears on the surface (like organic wholefood supermarkets selling roses imported from Africa. Hmm?!). Anyway, what I am getting at is that Matt and Lentil seem to be truly truly practicing what they preach. This is a wonderful thing, and so darn refreshing. Spending time in their world was a real joy.

I’m looking forward to sharing more on this delightful pair of doers on The Planthunter soon! In the meantime, check out these bunch of cuties….
