There is a certain sense of comfort found within the word ritual. It implies an idea of continuity, a story, a sense of symbolism, and a hint of control. When relating to plants and nature, ritual can mean all sorts of things from the ritual of giving flowers, Zen Buddhist garden making rituals, rites of passage connected to youth and landscape and more.

This month on The Planthunter we’re exploring the rituals we create around plants and nature with stories on Zen Buddhist gardens in Japan, an interview with photographer Tamara Dean, an exploration of altar making, flower giving, the art of bonsai, a bunch of book reviews and more.
